House Budget Funds Smoking Cessation and Elimination of KCHIP Premiums
On March 10, 2010, the Kentucky House passed HB 290—its version of the 2011-2012 budget. Despite controversy over whether the budget is adequate for Kentucky’s needs and to promote economic growth, two key health appropriations prove substantial and a positive step for health care in Kentucky:
- $370,000 is included in each fiscal year to suspend KCHIP premiums, which will ease the burden on low-income families.
- Funding is provided for smoking cessation programs for Medicaid recipients, which has been an unfunded mandate for several years.
The House budget bill now awaits Senate approval. If these two important appropriations remain in the final version, many low-income Kentucky families will be both significantly and positively affected. For more information on the House budget details, please see Highlights of the House Budget.
