New Census Data On Uninsured in Kentucky

New census data released on September 13 revealed that 640,000 or 14.9% of Kentuckians were uninsured in 2010.  The national average was 16.3%. Over the past decade, the number of uninsured Kentuckians has grown by 131,000 people.

KVH Executive Director Jodi Mitchell noted that “the fact that Kentucky is below the national average can be attributed to the value of Medicaid and KCHIP programs given the challenging economic times.  KY Voices for Health continues to support efforts to encourage streamlined enrollment and eligibility in Kentucky’s public programs to ensure access to health care and other appropriate services.”

The census report also showed that 56.6% of Kentuckians had employer-provided health insurance last year, compared to a national average of 55.3%.  The number of Kentuckians with employer-based coverage has declined by more than 170,000 over the past decade.
