Smoke-Free Advocates and Policymakers Speak Out

Educational vignettes featuring advocates and policymakers of Kentucky smoke-free laws have been created by The Kentucky Center for Smoke-Free Policy (KCSP) for their web site. The KCSP, housed at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, works with community leaders across the state to advocate for smoke-free communities.

The eight vignettes, 'Voices of Smoke-free Communities,' were created in response to requests from local policymakers, advocates and leaders desiring to learn from communities who have already gone smoke-free.

"Seeing and hearing first-hand experiences working with smoke-free laws will help educate other communities who are working towards clean indoor air for the workers and patrons in their communities," said Ellen Hahn, director of The Kentucky Center for Smoke-Free Policy.  "Everyone deserves to breathe clean air."

Every week for the next eight weeks, a vignette will be featured beginning with 'Smoke-free Laws: A Popular Decision,'  with commentary from Kristi Young, health initiatives representative, American Cancer Society; Jean Rosenberg, consultant, Floyd County Health Department; Scott Lockard, public health director, Clark County Health Department, Stan Holmes, city council member, City of Radcliff; Tim Stutler, city council member, City of Glasgow; Darrell Pickett, mayor of Glasgow; and Rod Mattingly, tobacco coordinator, Lincoln Trail District Health Department.

In addition to the vignettes and other key information, a newly released map of Kentucky smoke-free communities is posted on the web site.  

The vignettes were created by UK College of Nursing faculty, students and staff and funded by Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.
